The Régordane Road (Voie Régordane)
An ancient trade route from the Middle Ages, which used to be the road to the Mediterranean, linking Le Puy-en-Velay to St Gilles du Gard.
It goes through the Vellave, Gévaudan, Cévennes, Pays Nîmois and Camargue areas.

History

From the 12th to the 13th centuries, and with favourable climatic conditions, agricultural production and economy flourished, and towns grew bigger. The improvement of the quality of roads made trade easier, and the Régordane Road was built: bridges were constructed, difficult sections and slopes were paved. As traffic grew heavier, tolls became an excellent source of profit and were sought through wars and tactics.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the climate became harsher, trade was suspended, and the Régordane Road was no more taken care of.
There was renewed interest for the Road in the 18th century, as the King wished to use it as a way of carrying artillery to various regions.

Nowadays ...

Several centuries later, pilgrims and hikers have replaced traders, and the Régordane Road has become the GR 700, waymarked from the Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Gilles.
