Along the water, wool...With the Gévaudan’s past strongly linked to wool, discovering the Calquières wool mill is like going back to one’s roots, discovering the history of water, of men and of a trade.The Calquières wool mill is a historical monument on the banks of the Langouyrou, supplied with water from a ‘béal’ (stream) diverted from the Langouyrou River. The paddle wheelSheltered on the ground floor are the paddle wheel and the washing basin, the wringer and two threshing machines to untangle the fleece.The paddle wheel is one of the ancient principles of hydraulic energy. It is vertical and the water comes down on its paddles after a short fall of 1m45. A wide diameter is thus needed to supply enough energy (3 to 4 HP) for a set of belts to operate the machinery. |
