Romanesque Burgundian style from the 12th century,...
...One of the most remarkable Romanesque churches in Gévaudan.
The church was built by monks from St Chaffre, on the banks of the Mercoire stream, affluent of the Allier, at the foot of Beauregard Hill, in a Romanesque Burgundian style. There are a wide variety of capitals to discover, with plant or ornamented decors. It went through many changes during its long existence, and this is what gives it such specific charm.
The church was destroyed in the 16th century. Langogne was besieged during the Wars of Religion, most parts of the monastery burned down and the church underwent much destruction. More than 30 years were necessary to repair the damage. The Bourbon Restoration brought deep changes. The guerites were not rebuilt on the outside and the portal was entirely rebuilt in a flamboyant Gothic style.
In 1784, the quadrangular bell tower burned down in a fire, to be replaced by an octagonal one. The nave was only repaired in 1829.
The church was expanded in the 19th century to adapt to the increase in population.
